Are Migraines Affecting Your Quality of Life?

Migraine, Headache, Natural Relief, Drug FreeYour head is pounding, lights are blinding, and noises are making you sick. Does this sound familiar? You’re not alone. 12% of Americans have had a migraine episode within the past year (1). Migraines can lead to an inability to perform basic daily tasks. Many are frustrated with their debilitating symptoms. A study conducted by Lipton et al. examined migraine sufferers and found the following –

Effects on Quality of Life

  • 85% reported a significant reduction in completing household chores
  • 50% stated that they were more likely to have disagreements with their spouses and children
  • 32% feared making plans with friends and family due to possible cancellation (2)

How does a migraine differ from a typical headache?

  • Increased pain, often described as throbbing or searing
  • Nausea
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Duration – migraines can last anywhere from 4 – 72 hours (3)

Migraine sufferers are thought to have more sensitive nervous systems than others. Typical migraine triggers include lack of sleep, stress, strong foods (aged cheeses, wine), and low blood sugar (3). Medical management of migraines is aimed at reducing the severity of symptoms. While this may be suitable for short-term relief, many migraine sufferers are seeking effective alternative treatments.

A Natural Option

Here at Precision Spinal Care, we want to find the potential root cause of your migraines. Misalignment of the top bone in your neck (the atlas) can lead to these debilitating headaches. When the atlas is out of place, it can cause tension in your spinal cord. Your spinal cord is responsible for sending messages to and from your brain. Tension on the spinal cord leads to improper signals in the nervous system.

Dr. Packer is specially trained in the NUCCA procedure, a gentle, specific chiropractic technique that allows for proper re-alignment of the atlas. When this bone is in the correct location, proper nerve communication occurs. In one study, a 35 year old suffered with migraines for 12 years. After one atlas adjustment, she had a significant reduction of her symptoms. In this case, three months of specific atlas care lead to complete cessation of her migraines.
